The 80s and Various Treaties

Since 1985 Japan has been the world’s leading exporter of manufactured goods and the world’s largest provider of developmental aid. This did not happen over night however. Ever since 1858 when the shogun signed disadvantageous commercial treaties with the US and several European countries Japan has been part of many failed and unsuccessful treaties. Recently the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan conducted a study focusing on major trade agreements reached between the US and Japan said that 10 out of 45 Japanese/US trade agreements have been failures. These numbers were taken from 45 bilateral trade agreements reached in the last sixteen years. The ten accords that have been failures were concerned with telecommunications equipment, insurance, apples, and paper products. The report also went on to state that only thirteen accords total in beef, citrus products, cellular phones, and semiconductors, have brought about successful results.
